Save the Pawikan

The DENR Biodiversity Management Bureau is the lead agency in the implementation of the Pawikan Conservation Program (PCP), one of the programs of RA 9147, the “Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act.” As DENRBMB ventures into partnership and cooperation with LGUs, government agencies and private sectors for the implementation of the PCP, PPIPC pioneered the industries’ collaboration with the said agency on the protection of endangered marine turtles.

From a MultiPartite Monitoring Team (MMT) project, it evolved into an institutionalized community project with the DENR, the LGU of Calaca and Department of Education-Calaca. Known as the “Collaborative Project for Marine Turtle Conservation and Protection in Calaca, Batangas,” the project promotes various conservation efforts such as identification, documentation and addressing of threats to marine turtle population and their habitats; research, monitoring and information exchange on marine turtle ecology; public awareness and IEC.

From 2005, we have tagged and released 139 adult turtles of various species such as the Olive Ridley (L epidochelys olivacea), Green Turtle (C helonia mydas ) and the highly valuable and widely poached Hawkbill Turtle (E retmochelys imbricata ); transplanted 2194 turtle eggs and released 821 hatchlings.
